Well, despite the poison which my landscaper injected into the tree stumps last week, new green shoots have been sprouting. I have concluded that he is incompetent and knows nothing about killing trees. Duh! $80 gone down the drain. Grrr.
So, I googled “how to kill tree stumps,” and came up with a bunch of suggestions, ranging from digging the stumps out to setting them on fire. There was one suggestion, though, which I am willing to try: Cover the stumps with tarps, thus preventing the young shoots from getting any sunlight. Makes so much sense I could’ve kicked myself for not thinking of it sooner.
So, David will buy a couple of tarps, cover the stumps, and lay some rocks on top to keep the tarps from blowing away. Let’s see if this kills the stumps for good.
P.S. Okay, Liz, I’ll call some licensed landscaping companies for advice and estimates before going the tarp route.

as a 13 yo, dad gave me an ax and told me give our stumps 200 blows a day.
eventually the trees died and I developed nice arms but lost all six toes from my left foot when I missed the stumps.
to this day, I must tack 3 steps towards port side to walk 2 steps forward

gigi- remember when I suggested you use a licensed professional landscaping company? It’s not to late to call one and get professional advice about the whole removal process.

Actually, the poison may still work. There is also a special paint to put over the stumps.

OK, I agree with Liz. I’ll hold off buying tarps and will call a licensed landscaping company for an evaluation and estimate. And if they are over-priced, I’ll call another.

I used Roundup to kill a pretty big tree not just a stump. I drilled some holes in the trunk, poured the Roundup and within a week all the leaves fell off. That was more than 3 months ago and no new leaves have shown up since then. I can just snap the branches so I know it’s dead.

Another resource you can try is the CTAHR (college of tropical agriculture and human resources) website (http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/ctahr2001/). There is a lot of helpful information including free downloads on gardening, plants, vegetables, etc.
You can also try and call (or go visit) a master gardener at the Oahu Urban Garden Center next to Home Depot in Pearl City. I’ve never used them but one of my neighbors had called them when he had problems with his lawn. He recommended them. http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/ougc/master.asp
