I was watching CNN today when a segment about Barack Hussein Obama’s name was shown. The president-elect intends to include his Muslim middle name during the oath of office next month, because, he said, he wants to follow tradition. All previous presidents have included their middle name, so Obama wants to do the same. He is not trying to make a statement or make a point.
Well, as Colin Powell would say, what’s wrong with having a Muslim middle name? There are many good, law-abiding Muslims in the United States, and no one should assume they are all terrorists. Obama’s father was a Muslim, hence the name. However, Barack has always been a Christian.
So, what’s in a name? Readers of my books and articles know that I go by Glenda “Chung” Hinchey. I debated using just my first and married names, but decided to include my maiden name, because I didn’t want readers to think I was Irish. I am unashamed to admit I am Korean. Nothing wrong with that, is there?
I hope that Barack Hussein Obama is able to reboot America’s image in the Muslim world, where people should feel some kinship with him.

“The boy’s name Hussein \hu(s)-sein\ is pronounced hoo-SAYN. It is of Arabic origin, and its meaning is “good; small handsome one”. The name of a prominent person in Shiite Islam and a royal name in Jordan. American President Barack Hussein Obama.
Hussein has 4 variant forms: Husain, Husayn, Husein and Hussain.”
This name is often heard as “beloved Husayn” evoking the historical figure in Islam. To me, it is even more precious as the founder of the Baha’i Faith, Baha’u'llah, was named Mirza Husayn Ali i Nuri as a child.
Husayn is really a beloved name. I can see why Barak’s father named him this way. It is a name associated with sweetness, charisma, greatness, and sacrifice.
I hope more westerners will find it easier to accept diversity and become comfortable with men’s names as they have with women’s names like Layli and Alisha.

1.Nothing wrong with the names, millions of Husseins, Mohameds, Usamas, Osamas, and others of the like.
2.Why do WE have to repair our image, last time I checked WE did not hijack 4 jets and kill civilians, remember?
3.I think it is naive to think that having a semi black president with an absentee Muslim dead beat dad is going to change anything in the Middle East.
The Mullahs and politicos hate and fear the US, just imagining American style democracy in their countries must give them the sh*ts at night.
Do we really think that with Obama as our prez, Iran and it’s ilk will come to it’s senses and stop funding terrorists?
In that case hire gigi as UN secratary, I know Pyong Yang will turn a new leaf and maybe Kim Il-sung will get that much needed hair cut.
thank you, getting off the soap box

Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. We had no moral right to invade that country. Just think of the 4,000+ soldiers who have been killed in a senseless war — more dead now than when those planes hit the twin towers.
Let’s put it this way: How would you feel if the Iraqi invaded the USA on false premises and destroyed our infrastructure? Can you honestly say that the Iraqi are better off today than under Saddam? I think not!

Dear Gigi,
Nothing wrong with identifying with your heritage; for that matter, not necessary to ask anyone’s opinion if it’s o.k., or not o.k. to do so.
It’s a free country and it’s good to be proud of whatever origin we come from…..no need to ask if it’s o.k.

well, I just hope with Obama at the helm that he or his staff won’t allow the people/children of Muslim faith to interrupt classwork at any public schools by facing a certain direction, kneeling/bowing to their faith. If they do then I’d hope Christians, Catholics, etc. start a new ritual in the middle of day also. There should be no crosses, head scarfs or for that matter any other religious ornaments to be allowed in public schools.
Gigi, what is the name of your newest book out there? the one pertaining to your Gramps infidelity I thinks.

Pocho, Grandpa was never unfaithful to his wife. But, according to my uncle, he rented out his property to a pimp and prostitutes. My aunt disputes this and was very upset with me. She, of course, says it is untrue.
Title of that book: LOVE, LIFE, AND PUBLISHING: A SECOND MEMOIR.
Title of newest book: LOOK FOR ME IN HAWAII: A THIRD MEMOIR.
