I just wrote a $287 check to HECO for electricity consumed in June.  David expects the bill to increase with the rising price of oil.  And, of course, we have five air conditioners in our home.  It’s been beastly hot and humid with the temperature indoors zooming to 87 degrees.  So, why the hell do I end up wearing a heavy sweater?  Well, with a/c the temperature drops to 75 degrees.  Although I don’t like the cold, I do like to turn on the a/c to suck out the humidity.

If I had my druthers, I would raise the thermostat in the bedroom from 73 to 80 degrees.  “Over my dead body!” says my husband.  Being an extremely hairy haole, he rarely feels cold.  There he is, lying on top of his thin blanket, while I shiver under a heavy blanket.  Yes, I had to return the king-size comforter to the store and purchase two twin-size blankets of different thickness.  I wonder how many couples have had to compromise this way.

We’re expecting my daughter and her husband in a couple of weeks. Tif is OK with normal temperatures. Her husband has to have it COLD. He’ll keep the air conditioner on ALL NIGHT with the overhead fan going so that Tif needs to have a heavy comforter to sleep.

We have air conditioners for the upstairs rooms but have only used them so far when Ed is here. At other times, we just use the ceiling fan. We live on the side of a hill so we get a lot of the cool breezes which is a lovely thing.

Lucky you, Kay! We, on the other hand, are surrounded on 3 sides by tall buildings, so there’s not much of a breeze.

wow, $280+ for one month’s electricity for 3 people would be pretty steep for our pockets but its been hot/humid in June as it seems summer weather came a bit early this year. I’ve got a family of 4 and we suffer during the summer but currently at $110/month I don’t mind sweating it out for another 3 months.

Do you have a solar water heater system installed on your roof?

oh yeah, I just go with the flow and let the wife buy what she wants as far as the bedding goes. I don’t understand the arrangement as she’s got the comforter, ~ 4 thin sheets, 4 pillows, and 2 towels. All I need is my pillow and one thin sheet and I’m good for the nite. I dread folding all her stuff if I’m the last out of bed so usually I’m up @ 4-4:30 just about every morning.

oh well, Now you know the rest of the Story.

today I made a delivery to Hawaii Kai and seen alot of people who pitched tents around their bay. It sure looked like a nice day for all the well-to-do people out thataways for the fireworks show tonite. No homeless/beach people tents that ruins the clean and nice waterfront scenery.

Have a Great 4th of July weekend.

Wow, that’s a huge electric bill.

Yo Gigi — Do Hawaiians use dehumidifiers for their home interiors? Even in a lower room or basement, with it’s collected water drains into a pipe or drain, it pulls humidity out of the household air, so the A/C doesn’t work as hard. Oh yeah, Kansas City has rivers all around, so we’re pretty humid. We can “balance out” our electric and gas bills to have a monthly average, so we not so shocked. In winter, we use humidifiers to keep from running the heat too high. You need a warm waterbed and sweatpants to sleep in! Cheers, DrumMajor

from my calculations, investing in a new solar water heating system to replace our 20 year old one was that in 3-4 short years it’d pay off itself with the electricity costs saved. After the payoff, the solar system will actually be making money for us at ~ $40/month, thats almost $500 a year plus its warranted for 10years. So we’ll make $3000 in 10 years of owning it and the xtras that comes after the 10year warranty period as we had our last one for 20 years.

DM, we do not have an attic in the living and family rooms; we have cathedral ceilings, so dehumidifiers would not work. We spend the bulk of our day in those rooms when it is hottest. I do not mind the humidity when it is cool.

Pocho, we already have a solar system to heat our water.
