Our wonderful king size bed at the YMCA in Hong Kong, 2010. Are similar beds available in Mainland China?
I have been in touch with the travel agent in charge of our trip to Mainland China. Besides upgrading our seats to business class on Korean Airlines, she told me she would try to reserve a king size bed for us. Although we will be staying in 5-star hotels (like the Hilton or the Marriott), not all of them have king size beds. David and I might have to sleep on TWO DOUBLE BEDS. This would be really bad, because David is 6 feet tall and his feet would stick out.
My question is: Why aren’t king size beds available in all 5-star hotels in Mainland China? When we were in Hong Kong two years ago, we stayed at the YMCA. It had been recently renovated and the king size bed was superb. It was so big, we could have fitted two tall adults and one child in it. Wow! That was truly wonderful!
On the other hand, king size beds in Mainland China might be smaller than the ones in the U.S. This was the case in Japan. The king size bed in Tokyo was so small we had to sleep 69. Awful experience!
Ah well, it’s all good. Compare our travel experiences with those of my niece. She SLEPT IN THE FOREST during her 2-year journey through Asia, and had to fend off people who wanted to steal her things. She rarely had a good night’s sleep. I wouldn’t dream of traveling that way!

When traveling, how you sleep at night can make or break the next day. Hope you can get confirmation.

The King sized bed in Hong Kong looked wonderful! Hope you get something similar when you go to China.

When you are young you do wild things. I used to always book in smaller hotels run by their owners, never a chain. I have stayed in 5-star hotels, but always on my employer’s dime.
Maybe the kings in China were smaller? Dianne

The one thing that surprised me the most is that the beds in China are downright HARD. Of course I didn’t stay in any 5-star hotels but Chinese ones. I suspect that the places you will stay will have regular mattresses…

sleep 69, lol, I shouldn’t laugh. There are so many details to think about, but I think it will prepare you for a lovely trip.

Maybe the width dimension will be the length way to sleep? Or diagonal on a double? DrumMajor

I could not hang with the forest plan. Kudos to your niece.

Do the Chinese hotels have a website? Sometimes you can get an idea how “accommodating” the hotel is just by everything else about the hotel, if you can’t find a lengthy description of the hotel room.
I have never enjoyed group tours, so any trip abroad will have to be planned and booked ourselves. I am waiting til we are retired in 2 years when I have the time and peace of mind to do the research (but unfortunately without pension our quality of retirement will depend on CD rates). China seems very interesting. Maybe even the Philippines and Southeast Asia. Husband always wants to travel where our dollars are worth more….soon it will be harder to do lol

In Europe you’d probably have twin beds in all the good hotels. I couldn’t bear to sleep in the same bed as somebody else, even my husband.
I don’t know what happens in China, are bed sizes to do with the average size of the country’s inhabitants?

China is unknown territory to us, so I don’t know what they base their bed size on. Lol. All I remember is that the bed in Hong Kong was huge, but the bed in Tokyo was too small for us.

I sure hope you find the perfect solutions. For the first time, I’m glad I’m short…. ummm…. I mean not so tall.

If any country wants American tourists, they should be ready to accommodate some large people. People in my family are small, short and slim so it doesn’t matter. I find more inconvenience in other things like no horizontal spaces, no mirrors, too few electrical outlets, western type toilets, or peep holes in doors mounted for people six feet tall. Furniture made for tall people is also inconvenient for me. I have short legs.

My Gary is 6’2″ and I am 5’2″ and he really needs a king sized bed so I know the feeling.

We prefer king sized beds when we travel. the alternative is two queens. Comfortable sleeping is important.
