Fountains of Tivoli, Italy. 1969.
Although I loaded the dishwasher to the brim on Sunday, there were still many items left that had to be washed by hand. I was not looking forward to washing them upon my return from dinner after the opera. But, lo and behold, when I stepped into the kitchen that night, I discovered that Lisa had done the dishes and put everything away. Heavenly! Mahalo, Lisa!
I’ll miss this girl. She will graduate in May with a BS in Kinesiology (the study of physical movement of the human body) and will then fly to Nevada to do graduate work in Physical Therapy.
Originally, she planned to stay with a friend in California, pick up her car at the dock, and then drive to Nevada. But, that plan worried me. What if her old car broke down en route? What would she do then? Further, David warned Lisa not to speed, because she would be ticketed. She replied that she had to speed in order to get to her destination in 5 hours.
Well, I put my foot down. This daughter of mine would NOT be driving solo for 5 hours. I informed Lisa that we would pay for the shipment of her car from Hawaii to Nevada and she would have to fly directly from Hawaii to Nevada, bypassing California. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
Recently, she has been acquiring quotes from various shippers. So far, the lowest quote is $1,200. The trick is finding a driver willing to take the car from the dock in California and truck it to Lisa’s apartment in Nevada. Lisa said that if no one is interested in the amount of money quoted, her car will just sit at the dock indefinitely.
She will get in touch with a broker in March. Ugh! So much to be concerned about.

What a sweetie to clean up for you. Hope she finds a driver that can be trusted. Maybe a nice retired person??

Let me check with my Gary he used to haul cars and he may know another alternative to transport her car. Best for her not to drive to Nevada since going over the Sierras this time of year can be treacherous. Which dock in California, Long Beach?

Either San Diego or Los Angeles. She will be leaving Hawaii in May or June.

How nice she is!!!!
Can imagine you are worried!!!!
Wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to sell this car and just buy a new (used/old) one in Nevada?
Quite costy and lotsa troubles to make a car travel….
have a lovely day while we are trying to do the best of the grayness and tristesse we have here,
Beatrice

You would think so. However, she said she spent $3,000 on car repairs recently and does not think she can find something as good as her Nissan Altima in Nevada.

Not to betray my gender or anything, but how many sons would have done such a thoughtful good deed?

I am sure you would have, Hank. Didn’t you help your mother?

Actually, the chore assigned to my brother and me when we were growing up was to wash the dishes. It turned out to be a fun task as we could flick water on each other while we washed and the other dried.
To this day, I enjoy washing dishes. HOWEVER, Lisa saw a need and spontaneously decided to help.

I was feeling guilty about leaving you with all those dishes, so I’m glad Lisa came to your rescue.
Not that it’s any of my business, but if Lisa can handle traffic on Oahu, driving from California to Nevada should not be much of a challenge. Why not invest in a GPS for her. With that and a cell phone I’m sure she could manage and be perfectly safe. She will probably need a car where she;s going, too. It might really cross her up not to have wheels. Honestly, it’s not all that dangerous. My sister drives from SF to Tahoe all the time by herself, not to mention my 90 year old aunt, who has been doing the Napa to Tahoe freeway run for years! Just my two cents worth. Wouldn’t worry too much.

Lisa is fearless. I guess I should be also, since I traveled solo around the world after college. Lol.

It almost sounds easier to sell her car and buy a new one in Nevada! Just saying.

Why not take the money to ship her car both ways and buy a new-used one there. From LA to Vegas is 8 hours at 80mph.
So glad you had all those wonderful folks to dinner and talk. What a greaat thing.

Her car has to last at least the 3 full years she will be in graduate school. If it takes 8 hours to drive it from LA to Vegas, all the more reason to have a driver truck it over there. After she graduates and gets a lucrative job as a physical therapist, she can buy herself a brand new Mercedes! Lol.

That was so sweet.
Good luck with the car. Maybe her California friends know a handy individual that would drive it and could fix if it broke down. I keep thinking a handy 20-year old has got to be out there that would not mind some extra change for a day or so of work.

I would prefer that her car be placed on the bed of a truck to preserve the tires and engine of the car.

Lisa is a sweetie! You have every reason to be proud. My daughter is a fearless driver too. I’d rather not know where she’s going off to. Funny how I always worry more about her than Jon even though he’s more… ahhhh…. adventurous. He drove …ummm… was it 16 hours to surprise us at Yellowstone last spring, napping by the side of the road or something like that?
I’m sure Lisa would be just fine if she chose to drive, but it doesn’t stop us from worrying.

We never stop worrying about our kids. I missed your party post. Sounds like a good send off to the opera.

That was very nice of Lisa .After reading all the comments above now even I feel that she is going to be fine

Don’t know where everyone is getting 8 hours from. It’s a little over four hours from LA to Vegas. I’ve driven it many times (at the speed limit — if you stop at Whisky Pete’s along the way I could see 8 hours). Also, if the car is good enough to ship from HI, it’s good enough to drive to Vegas. That highway is packed in both directions, so desolation isn’t a problem should something crop up. Plus, the drive is a straight shot, nothing sketchy.
Sometimes living in terror isn’t really living at all.

I understand your concern for your daughter – there are awful nutters out there in the world.

I agree she should drive if she is going from LA or San Diego to Vegas, no problem and roads are good and well traveled. I was thinking of San Francisco to Reno which is much different. Just don’t leave on a Friday or after 3 pm on a week day since traffic will be bad

we do what we can to keep our children safe and a woman alone is always a concern..I would do the same thing and have done the same thing for our daughter..
