PUR – Worth buying?

When he was installing our new solar water heater, the installer told me he found a lot of sediment at the bottom of the old heater, especially when he tilted and emptied the heater. That scared me. What in the world are we drinking, I wondered. So, after much discussion, David went to Home Depot and purchased a PUR Water Filter.

This is how it looks, installed:

When the black knob on the right is horizontal, unfiltered tap water flows from the right side.

When the black knob is turned to the vertical position, filtered water flows from the left side. A green light flashes six times, after which we can use a glass or cup to capture the flow.

This PUR is the latest model, which contains a charcoal filter with natural minerals added to enhance the flavor of the water. The previous model lacked the natural minerals. So, look for the latest model if you are interested in buying a PUR.

We were instructed to avoid sending hot water through the filter. If we want hot water, we are to send it to the unfiltered side of the faucet.

The only trouble with this system is that it does not filter the water going through the ice cube maker. Unfiltered ice cubes in filtered water? Not good. So, I have poured filtered water into a pitcher, which I store in the fridge. Another way around it is to make ice in a tray and take the cubes from there.

I like drinking purified water. It tastes great!

Just be sure to change the filter regularly. They can be germ traps. I wonder if it would take clorine out of the water. I will check it out for my tap water smells like a swimming pool. I only drink bottled water, no telling what it has in it but at least it doesn’t smell.
    Thanks for the tip.

Yes, the gadget supposedly will tell us when to change the filter, usually after 100 gallons of water. And it is supposed to remove chlorine from the water (not our problem).

I like my Brita water pitcher with a filter. I change it often too. I have well water so it isn’t treated when it comes into the house. It is a very deep well and we filter drinking water which is very tasty. I hope it is good quality. I could always microwave it too, but I don’t.

It sounds like you will have peace of mind now! I try not to worry about it as they assure us our tap water is as good as the bottled kind. Although we do still drink bottled water on the go.

We use a Brita filter to put tap water through. Since we don’t use ice cubes it’s not an issue, but our little pitcher has a filter that is changed every two months and the water tastes great. I like your installation setup!

I like it. I always question what is in our water.

having fun catching up on all your recent doings. We have an under the sink filter for our water. I believe our water is very good, but the filter takes out the chlorine.

Here we use it all the time. The most popular one is Aquaguard. I too make ice cubes like you do by keeping filtered water on a tray and leaving it in the fridge.

Our water is not as good as it was a couple of years ago I would like to know if you think a filtration system is worth getting.

I have used filtered water for years. We have a model from Gaium. Removes elements that could kill my parrots who are more sensitive than me. Dianne

I just don’t worry about my city drinking water. It tastes fine to me and I pay for the service of having clean water provided to my home through the water system.

I don’t know if you will see this but I have replaced hundreds of water heaters (plumber in a former life) and they ALL have sediment. In fact one of the recommended maintenance procedures (never followed) is to flush some water out of the drain at the bottom on a regular basis.

In any case here in HNL I use a Britta pitcher for coffee water and at my house on the mainland I have a reverse osmosis filter for the ice maker and drinking water. I feel that it takes care of any “off” flavors.
