Wanda: too little too late

The State Department of Health, Developmental Disabilities Division, wrote to my husband regarding his sister Wanda’s death two years ago.  Specifically, they requested his consent to release her medical records from the medical center and psychiatrist that treated her prior to her death.  This involves sending them signed consents, notarized affidavit of next-of-kin, and her death certificate.  The reason for this is that they are conducting an internal death review, because Wanda received services from the division.

TWO YEARS TOO LATE!

Where were they when she was strapped for cash?  Or when she came home from surgery to a bare kitchen?  There seemed to be very little follow-up to her numerous problems.

Give them credit for wanting to assess and update their practices and procedures to ensure that their clients are taken care of in the best possible way.  But that’s not going to bring Wanda back.

Oh, well, David and I are just as guilty.  We regret not being more generous financially, and we are sorry we took her for granted, assuming that she would outlive us.  It just goes to show we should stress kindness in our lives.  Let this be a hard lesson for all of us.

    Well Gigi —
It might have been too difficult to speak with family right after losing someone. If they can glean some information from you and hubby, maybe they can improve for the next folks who need better services. The next people needing their services might be someone you know or another family member.
Having Social Workers intervene sooner than later sometimes helps, but most families don’t know to ask, nor do doctors. A person has to almost be totally without family or money or any ability to care for themselves before a nurse or social worker can request that they be taken care of by the state.
We’re saying midwestern prayers to help you through the upcoming rains. Hope a friendship umbrella with aloha makes it easier. Please keep us posted.
    Aloha, DrumMajor

Too little too late for Wanda, but perhaps not for the next person. If you help them, perhaps her death will have purpose.

This is a very wise post, GiGi.
Isn’t it amazing how different you & I are, and yet are friends?
    Aloha my friend!
