Driving to the Elks Club

scenic hawaii 002-A

Hawaiian waterfalls.

I wish my husband were also my chauffeur.  I hate to drive at night, which is understandable since the lights confuse my already addled brain.  But, even during daylight, I find myself loath to drive myself to a new destination, such as the Elks Club.  It is there that I dearly want to hear a University of Hawaii professor speak about the Beauty and the Beast theme in literature and film.  But, darn, I am simply afraid of getting lost.  David could be my savior.  However, he wants to watch television, not listen to a lecture.

You know what?  I’ll try to convince him to take me on a trial run by showing me the correct route to take to the Elks Club.  He’ll drive; I’ll observe.  Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

How in the world did my friend, Madeline, drive for so long?  She was 87, when the DMV refused to renew her driver’s license, because she was deemed too old to drive.  Well, she went on to live to 101, all the while cursing her lack of independence.

If you are a woman my age (67) or older, I’ll give you all the credit in the world if you are able to drive here, there, anywhere, day or night!  Wow, that’s incredible! How I envy you!

P.S.  David read this post and told me he will attend the lecture with me.  Halleluia!

    David is a sweetheart.
Tom does so much of the driving that I do get nervous when i have to drive around the city. I can do it, but I really have to know my route ahead of time. When Tom drives he has me for a navigator.

I would be lost without my car. I returned on Wednesday after spending Easter in Dublin, a 330 mile round trip! My car I get to Elly’s house in three hours, if I was to depend on buses and trains it might take up to seven hours and many changes to get there.

I am 66 and not driving because of stroke, but I started having difficulties driving at night in my 40s. By mid-50s I rarely drove at night. My mother voluntarily gave up driving at 89. Her best friend was still driving safely at 92.
