No ordinary patient

Yesterday, I read a new book on my Kindle, one that held my attention from beginning to end.  Usually, books get read halfway and then I lose interest.  But, I was really absorbed in this one.  The title is “Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife,” and was written by Eben Alexander, M.D.

Dr. Alexander was stricken by an extremely rare disease, called bacterial meningitis.  While he was in a deep coma for seven days, he experienced the amazing beauty of heaven.  Like all people who have had a near-death experience, he understood that the basis of life is UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.  He began to appreciate the spiritual world.

I won’t belabor the point.  Suffice it to say that this was no ordinary patient in a coma.  This was a well-known and respected neurosurgeon, who had practiced medicine and research at Harvard Medical School and Boston hospitals.  One certainly would not call him “naïve.”

Nor was he brain damaged.  After his recovery, he resumed his medical career. He also began discussing his near-death experience with other doctors and scientists as well as lay people.  This book is his attempt at expanding his audience so that more people will know what he went through.

Is there a God?  Is there a heaven?  Do you believe in unconditional love? Does good always prevail over evil?  Dr. Alexander’s fascinating book answers these questions.  You can draw your own conclusions.
