Being laid back

Hawaii 017-A

Hawaii.

I was glad Maria’s mother in law was able to stay home and watch our grandkids, who were too sick to attend school.  I had a hair appointment, and David wanted to have the tailor alter his pants, so we were both preoccupied.  It’s nice to have back up baby sitters!

Now that David is quasi-retired, we seem to spend a lot of time together.  My sister in law wanted to know how well we get along.  Are we at each other’s throat?  Well, the answer is “No.”  As a matter of fact, two friends of mine mentioned that I am a lot “calmer” due to the fact that my husband is so “laid back.”  I admit I used to be uptight and nervous when I was single.  I attribute it to a difficult childhood.

When we were gathered for dinner at the Prince Court Restaurant last week, I asked my 3 year old grandson who his best friend at preschool was.  He said, “Eddie.”  Then he said “Marvin” (not his real name) was “not nice,” because he liked to hit the other children.  Marvin has left the school for a different one.  I wonder if his parents spanked him when he got home.  Violence begets violence.

There was an article in the newspaper about a homeless woman, who punched her 2 year old toddler in the face.  Witnesses called the police, and the mother was sent to jail while her daughter was placed in foster care.  Sad, isn’t it?

I like the way Maria and Grant discipline their children.  When the kids misbehave, they are put on time out for 5 minutes.  It seems to work.

Hello Gigi! How have you been?

I am back. Glad to be visiting your blog. Nice to know David and you are getting to spend time together. That’s the best life can offer.

Getting expelled from preschool? I never heard of such a thing.

The homeless mother who punched her child probably did the 2-year-old the biggest favor of her life. Now the child can be off the streets and maybe wind up in a good home.

It makes me happy to read about how you appreciate your relationship (in a bittersweet kind of way, understand). You will never regret it.

I thought my own Dad was a violent man until my friend Becky told me her Dad got drunk and chased her with a butcher knife. Dad didn’t drink, so I thought perhaps he was not so bad. Today he would be recognized as a child abuser. Too sad. Thus I don’t talk or write about it.

Fortunately, I read Dr. Spock when I had my oldest child, and used his recommendations for discipline on my own kids, so I was not into child abuse.

My daughter has been an even better parent, although she is having difficulty letting go of the last girl who is now a sophomore in college.

David looks a lot calmer and happier in the photos since his quasi retirement too!! It’s like being unhappy and uncomfortable for so long you forget how good being without the bogey is. I gather that because unemployment approved of his claim, he must have gone through a lot more employer abuse than we read from your blog.

“Marvin” wasn’t expelled! He’s going to another school…I think because he qualified for services at that school. Totally not expelled.

I tried spanking my first child just once. It enraged her so much it was clear that that was not the way to go. It reminded me of how I felt when I got hit as a child.
My daughter was born 40 years ago. We have learned so much more about parenting now than we knew in just those 40 years. Time out is one of those “new” concepts.
