What makes us happy

David and I enjoyed the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra concert, featuring concert master Ignace Jang, who performed Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in B minor.  This is a virtuoso piece and when it was over, the audience gave Jang a standing ovation.  Wow, so impressive!

There were two other works by Mozart, but I felt that the Elgar Variations on an Original Theme (Enigma) was the best of all.  I loved the lush sound of the orchestra.

One of the perks of sitting in the balcony is the ability to see all of the instruments on stage.  It was fun watching the timpanist.  He came in at the right moment and beat on the timpani with precision.  Fascinating!

I adore symphonic music in the Blaisdell Concert Hall.  I don’t think the acoustics can ever be matched at home, even with stereo speakers surrounding you.  This is a shot of the lobby at the Blaisdell:

And, of course, I am so glad that I don’t have to drag David to these concerts, as he goes willingly.  We both are classical musicians, can you tell?  And, no, we can’t perform jazz.  That’s a totally different skill, entirely.

I have a friend whose son plays the French Horn in one of the major philharmonic orchestras. We have all gone to see him perform and there really is nothing like listening to a live orchestra. Even watching our opera’s televised on the movie screen live, although enjoyed immensely, would not be the same as seeing them while sitting in the seats and looking up at the stage at the New York Met.

Was it any easier on David with the walking this time? So glad you can do this together.

The concert performance certainly made an impression on you. We could feel your enthusiasm coming right at us through your words Gigi. And sharing it with David must have made it an even more fantastic experience

Granny Annie asked the question I was about to – how did David manage the stairs this time. If taking his cane makes the experience even better then encourage him to do so
