How we spent July 4th

Thank goodness for our air conditioned home, because, baby, it was searing hot outside yesterday.  While others cooled off in the ocean, David and I spent Independence Day indoors, relaxing like a couple of old fuddy duddies.

We watched the traditional Hot Dog Eating Contest on TV.  Yeah, it was grotesque watching the guys stuffing themselves with all those hot dogs, and it made me want to barf.  But, David insisted he wanted to see this competition, as he does every year.

The guy on the right, Matt Stonie, won by eating 62 hot dogs, beating the defending champion in the middle, Joey Chestnut, who ate 60.  The prize was $10,000:

I watered the Boston ferns, hanging outside our family room:

David fixed our automatic lawn sprinkler, which had sprung a leak:

Then, he grilled steaks for our dinner on our gas grill in the patio.  He preheated the grill for 15 minutes and then cooked the steaks for 5 minutes on one side, 3 minutes on the other:

And, here’s our dinner – steak, tossed green salad, and a pasta salad:

It was a really mellow day, and we enjoyed ourselves.

It looks wonderful. So you are also getting the heat? I’m surprised since I thought it never got hot in Hawaii. But then again, I thought it never got hot in the Pacific Northwest! 🙂

Staying indoors and keeping cool sounds like a good idea to me, Gigi, and yiur dinner sure beats the hot dogs those other folks wolfed down.

It was sweltering in Vancouver Washington USA no respite from soaring temperatures at all and the fireworks made it bad for kitteh cats and dogs! My neighobrs THOUGHT they could put fireworks on our property and hit our roof and shrubs NOT..we have a friend in the sheriffs office he came by and informed them of the arson charges for burning down homes and property, they left their homes to go to Fort Vancouver for the big fireworks, yeah yippee skippee..Our two elderly cats were oky doky our baby kitteh cat had to have some medicine to chill..>We don’t have a/c we have a 1978 home tiny but it would have cost us $5,000 more for the house to have it installed, the fans just pushed the hot air around, but we are okay..Your dinner looked great..That Nathans hot dog eating contest looks horrible, it hurts my throat to look at the winners although I was surprised Joey Chestnutt lost this competitive eating contest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had lots of salads and I broiled a tiny steak for my hubs, we managed okay, glad it is over another day of scorching heat 97 predicted, biggest drought in Washington history and many are suffering so I am not going to complain, we are going to the beach with the cats this week to a tiny cabin by the shore for feasts from the sea with childhood friends our cats will be fine and we will cool off, always something to be grateful for in this world Aloha and have a wonderful week coming up!

We’ve finally gotten a reprieve from our hot weather now it’s raining every day cats and dogs. Looks like a relaxing day, did you see any fireworks in the distance?

I was craving a steak, but cannot eat much meat any more owing to gastric issues.

Sounds like the perfect da for you and David, although that hot dog eating contest grosses me out. what people will do to their bodies!

Your 4th of July sounded like a nice quiet day. I watched one of those eating contests once and that was enough for me, they make me feel quite nauseous. On the other hand your steak meal looked delicious.

Glad you enjoyed the holiday. Funny how even in retirement those ‘down’ times are so appreciated.

I’m absolutely hating the humidity even more than the heat… then again… I don’t like the heat either. Sigh…

Your dinner looks fabulous! I haven’t had steak in such a long time.
