David’s fifth surgery

Today, I will drive David to Straub for his fifth surgery. He previously has had surgeries on his back (herniated disk), two hands (carpal tunnel), and left knee (total knee replacement).  All four surgeries were successful.

Check-in today is at 7:30 am, and surgery on his right knee (total knee replacement) is at 10:10 am. Dr. Cass Nakasone is the surgeon.  David will recover from surgery in a private room.

When he phones me later in the day, I will drive to Straub and give him his beloved iPad. We will chat a bit, and then I will dine at the cafeteria downstairs and drive home.

After surgery, he will start physical therapy, walking up and down the corridor with assistance. The therapist will determine when David will be discharged.  Last year, he was discharged after three nights in the hospital, because he was considered too unstable to be discharged earlier.  If he had fallen at home, I would not have been able to pick him up.  I would have had to call the firemen to carry him to bed.

I’ll post a photo of David when I see him after surgery today.

Hope all goes well.

I love the Straub cafeteria. That hospital almost feels like a second home to us, having spent 10 days and nights there as a family when Dad got so ill on our trip to Oahu.

There is only one hospital in the world where I have ever spent so much time, which is Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, South Australia.

I hope the surgery goes well! 😉

Interesting to compare the differences between hospitals. We have had to be at the hospital at an earlier hour for each of our surgeries. All I wanted to do was sleep.
