Plans for the near future

Every month, we receive postcards in the mail advising us to list our home for sale.  The real estate market is hot right now, and many homes in our neighborhood have sold in the $850,000 – $950,000 range.  I think our 3 bedroom 2 bath house would probably sell for $900,000.  We have made many upgrades such as a security alarm system, automatic lawn sprinklers, and air conditioning throughout the house.  And the house sits on a 6,600 square foot lot, which is level and not on a slope of a mountain.

However, we have decided to stay in our home until we die.  We have no intention of moving into a care home or retirement facility.  If necessary, we will hire a live-in caregiver, who will accept a monthly stipend plus free room and board.  I believe Arcadia has a list of RNs and nurse’s aides, who can be hired on a part time or full time basis.

We have also decided to rent out our guest room to traveling nurses, who normally work for three months and then travel to another destination.  This arrangement seems ideal, because we can schedule the rental for times that are convenient for us.  There are three hospitals in our area:  Kaiser, Pali Momi, and Tripler.  We plan to contact them when we feel compelled to do so.  Right now, we don’t really need the additional income.

I hope this year will be a good one:  No deaths in the family, no surgeries, no physical therapy.  We might travel abroad, or we might not.

We’ll see what happens.

Real estate prices are all about location, location, location. Our 3 bedroom, 2 bath home, on 6,000 sq foot lot, would sell for about $200,000 right now. Of course, as we always say, where would we go if we sold? I’m sure you feel the same way.

That sounds like a good idea about your guest room. And looking at the difference in your home’s value and Delaine’s in Fresno, it’s true that it’s all about location, isn’t it? 🙂
