Flooring renovation completed

We finally finished renovating the flooring in our house. It spanned April 1-9 and necessitated a 5 day stay at the Airport Honolulu Hotel.

Abbey Carpet and Floor of Hawaii Store was in charge of the renovation.

We started with having the carpet tack strips and underlying asbestos tiles removed by Ohana Environmental Construction. That took a few hours.

Then, the next day, cement was poured over the floor in the dining room, hall, vanity, and closet. We had to stay in the hotel overnight while the concrete cured.

Then, koa vinyl planks were installed. These planks are waterproof, float over the concrete, and interlock together. We chose the upgraded planks with a cushioned layer underneath to improve walking and standing. This installation took one day. There was a small section that was uneven, so more cement had to be poured and cured. That took time.

Then, the molding and transitions were installed. That took two hours on the fourth day.

Finally, on the fifth day, the light grey carpet was installed in our living room and family room. This carpet is top of the line. It is made of soft nylon and is stain resistant. It resists stains from pet feces, urine, vomit, etc. The pad is made of foam and has a moisture barrier that prevents liquids from penetrating the pad.

We are very pleased with the results.

We don’t plan to renovate our house again in the future.

It is too much of an ordeal.

I’ve been wondering about you guys… wow, 5 days at the hotel. Anyway Gigi, your new flooring looks really beautiful! Those wooden planks are a lot nicer than what I imagined, they did a wonderful job. I like the light neutral carpeting too–it all looks really good. :^)

How beautiful! I understand your last statement about not wanting to do this again! We live in a very old house (42 years!) and have renovated/added so much over the years. Every time we do something, we say, “never again” but…. 🙂

Congratulations on getting through the home remodel. You are a braver sort than me. Just the idea of packing up and moving furniture to do that job gives me the newbie/jeebies….You were very smart to stay elsewhere while the work was done. It would be the only way I could even think of doing it.
