Salt Lake, Oahu: early married life

In 1979, David purchased a 3-bedroom 2-bath condominium in Salt Lake on the island of Oahu for $73,500 prior to our marriage in 1980. The complex was and is called Sunset-Lakeview (view of the sunset and Salt Lake):

Our apartment was on the fourth floor on the right side of this building. We sold it for $220,000 in 1991.

This is Likini West, located a block from Sunset-Lakeview. We bought a 1-bedroom 1-bath condo here as an investment and rented it to a military couple for $800/month.

This is Salt Lake District Park, where our children attended summer fun. While in college, Maria was hired as a summer fun teacher, and this job eventually led to a career in secondary math education. Lisa also tried her hand at teaching summer fun, but hated it and did not continue this line of work.

St. Philomena Roman Catholic Church: David and our children were baptized here. Unfortunately, none of us attends Mass anymore for various reasons. (We prefer to worship St. Mattress!)

St. Philomena Child Care: Maria attended this preschool, which was and is on the church grounds. Lisa attended a different preschool, Hawaii Child Center, which was located on the ground floor of Sunset-Lakeview.

Salt Lake/Moanalua Public Library: This libary has copies of my three memoirs available for check out.

Aliamanu Elementary School, which Maria and Lisa attended. Maria participated in the Gifted and Talented Program. She also received speech therapy, which cured her lisp.

Aliamanu Middle School, which our daughters attended. Maria was inducted into the Junior National Honor Society. Her honors program sent her and her honors classmates to Space Camp in Alabama, when she was in the eighth grade. As always, Maria excelled academically.

Soon’s Kalbi: This is our favorite Korean restaurant in the Salt Lake Shopping Center. Every Saturday, you’ll see David buying our take-out plate lunches to eat at home. I swear, they make the best meat juhn!

So, there you have it. Salt Lake on the island of Oahu is where we spent the first 11 years of our marriage. As Maria and Lisa got older, we decided we needed more space. Hence, we sold our two condos in 1991 and bought a spacious house in Foster Village about 2-3 miles away. No regrets!

Nice neighborhood tour, Gigi. Since I couldn’t invest and reinvest like you two did, I plan to retire in in your spare bedroom.

What a fine investment! To have it triple in value shows it was a great idea, and I’m glad to know that you have no regrets. It’s a beautiful place you live now!

You are such a great memory keeper, Gigi. It was fun to join you in this walk down memory lane.
I don’t think I have pictures of any of the many schools my kids went to before we lived here.

Great that your investments panned out to a comfortable retirement. I can’t say we had the same fortunes with real estate. It seems David bought his first investment at the right time, as well as selling in 1991. All good decisions.
