Hawaii’s primary election debates

David and I received our absentee ballots in the mail last Friday and promptly voted in the Primary Election, which is set for August 13.

Last Thursday, we watched the televised debates for Governor and Lt. Governor. We focused on the Democrats, as we don’t intend to vote for any Republicans this year.

There were no surprises, in my opinion. However, David did change his mind about whom to vote for. Earlier, he told me that he was going to vote for Vicky Cayetano for Governor and for Sherry Menor McNamara for Lt. Governor, because they are both business oriented. However, after watching the debates, he changed his mind and agrees with me that Dr. Josh Green is the best candidate for Governor and that attorney Sylvia Luke is the best candidate for Lt. Governor.

Dr. Josh Green for Governor:

Sylvia Luke, Esq., for Lt. Governor:

The other Democratic candidates were unappealing to us. We got tired of hearing Kai Kahele attack Dr. Green regarding his sources of income and funding. Who the hell cares where he gets his money? We don’t care. Vicky Cayetano has no political or legislative experience, whatsoever. I don’t think that she can or should run the government like a business company. Dr. Green, on the other hand, served 14 years in the Legislature (both the House and Senate) and has been Lt. Governor for the past 4 years. He also is a practicing emergency room physician, working twice monthly in Kona, Hawaii and has spearheaded the Covid response in Hawaii.

As for the Lt. Governor’s race, Sylvia Luke is by far the best candidate. She was born in South Korea and immigrated to Hawaii with her parents at age 9, not knowing a word of English. Now, look at her. She is a practicing attorney, who has served in the Legislature for 20 years and is chair of the House Finance Committee. She is married with a son in college and has an unblemished record. If Dr. Green wins the election, I think that Luke will work very well with him and be an asset in his administration.

One of the questions posed by the TV moderator was whether the Governor nominee should be allowed to pick his own Lt. Governor as his running mate or whether the Lt. Governor should be elected separately, as is now the case. All of the Lt. Governor candidates stated that they want the Governor nominee to appoint his own running mate. However, for this to happen, the Constitution would have to be changed via a referendum. I, myself, prefer to vote for the Lt. Governor, because I want my guy to be the one to replace the Governor should he die in office.

Let’s hope Dr. Josh Green and Sylvia Luke win the Primary Election. More power to them.

This is my secret, now public, Ballot:

I must say that HAWAII makes it so easy to vote. The ballot comes in the mail, you fill it out and mail it back. No fuss and no muss. Wonderful! The integrity of the election is maintained by the signed ballots being compared to signatures on file. First electronically and then if the ballot is rejected, a physical analysis is performed. There is also a walk in option for those who prefer to vote in person.

…making voting easy isn’t the Republican plan!

We are unsure when we will be called to vote. Some expect it to be this year, some say it will be next year.

They sound like some smart, good choices – – and good for David for keeping an open mind! 👍

You are definitely informed voters. Good job vetting the candidates. Hope you get your choices.

You must be brilliant because I basically agree with you. Everybody I know who voted for Trump said it was because he is a businessman. That didn’t work out at all. For future reference, I would like to say that Brickwood Galauteria is a truly outstanding human being.

We get our ballots mailed to us, also, and we have filled ours out and returned them. I love mail voting.

Our primary is the first week in august but I already voted and sent mine in, voting for our terrific governor and her team.

Good on you for voting – and so easily.
I wish I could say I stand 90% behind the one to vote… I do vote, but just the one who is the smallest beast.

I don’t know anything about your candidates but sounds like you checked them out well.
With all the dark money in politics I think where a candidates money comes from is important to know. All should be open and transparent and is troublesome if not.
