David and I watched the Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo Summer Olympics for several hours yesterday.
It is just incredible that there are 11,000 athletes from 200 countries participating in the Olympics. We saw so many different shades of skin color, different facial features, and different flags. It was awesome!
The USA has 613 athletes participating this year. About 100 of these athletes have not been vaccinated. How is this possible? Should they not be disqualified and expelled? I think it is insane that they should be allowed to participate, as they could become infected with the virus.
Anyway, I plan to watch the summer games as often as possible. I especially look forward to seeing Simone Biles compete in gymnastics. She is phenomenal.
I also look forward to watching the swimming and diving events. Unfortunately, Michael Phelps has retired. He won a total of 28 medals and is the most decorated Olympian of all time.
I am sure that David looks forward to watching the USA basketball team compete. He, himself, used to play basketball as an amateur, so he does love the game.

Hurrah for the great United States of America!
Bring home the gold!

I am very excited about the Olympics. I have been watching the games since the 60’s. I have so many memories of the notable moments. I look forward to so many exciting events!

Taking part without being vaccinated is crazy! I am not a fan and don’t watch anything, but hope you enjoy it! Valerie

…this Olympics will be historic, but perhaps not for the right reasons.

I saw a bit of the opening with that impressive drone display over the stadium in the shape of earth.

I don’t plan to watch this time around and think they should have been cancelled.

I enjoy watching too but I so think it should be a requirement to be fully vaccinated to be able to take part.

I did not realize that so many of the US athletes are not vaccinated. I agree it should be a requirement. Seems like a much more serious error than using Marijuana once and getting kicked off the team. We watched the opening ceremonies and will have the games on at least in the evenings. Right now table tennis is on this morning. It’s kinda fun to see a variety of competitions. Is ping pong a sport?

It is an exciting time and I just wish I had better coverage. Me too on Simone Biles. That woman defies gravity. Also enjoyed the flag bearers. The young man plays for my Marlins. He medaled in the 2014 winter Olympics in speed skating and is going for a medal in baseball in this one. Go Eddy Alvarez.

I’m impressed with how much you & David (and Arkansas Patti) know, our athletes need all the support they can get; but I agree with others, HOW could you work so hard to make it to the Olympics and then show up unvaccinated?? They should’ve been disqualified!

I had no idea that so many U.S. team members go unvaccinated. THat is quite sad.

We don’t have a TV at the lake but we saw some of the cycling road race highlights online. I’ll probably try to watch some gymnastics online too. I am appalled at how many Americans did not get vaccinated. They should not be allowed to compete. Or, for that matter, enter Japan.

i have always enjoyed watching the Olympics. I marvel at the capability of the human body to physically excel in so many different categories, showing its unbelievable potential. At the Olympic level, the mind plays an important role too, because now you have to perform under pressure. Witnessing the combination of the two, body and mind, for every event is awe-inspiring! Love the Olympics.

I have always enjoyed the Olympics, more events like Hockey, Track, Gymnastics, and the more “original” games. I love America, but I love the America that became through the Revolutionary War, as difficult as those times were, and as difficult it was for the founding fathers to unite a people from all over the world with different views. I still remember the bicentennial fireworks my dad took us to, so little we were. With time, I learned more about the foundations of this country. It’s amazing that this country ever became, yet the people believed. And that so many worked so hard, that we went through two world wars, men and others dying for freedom and to end tyranny. **In watching the Olympics, I find difficult to watch any U.S. team with members that don’t salute our flag, don’t embrace our history (The good and the difficulties, which gave rise to more good, sometimes eventually.), and don’t realize how amazing their opportunities are as a result of America becoming and all the men and women who made this possible. Pride in America (Healthy Pride) is how we should approach the Olympics.
